Adding with regrouping
When a place-value column contains ten or more units, trade ten of them for one unit in the next place. Regrouping changes how the quantity is written, not its value.
A method you can use
- Align ones under ones and tens under tens.
- Add the ones. Trade ten ones for one ten if needed.
- Add the tens, including the regrouped ten, and check with an estimate.
Worked examples
Find 48 + 36.
- Ones: 8 + 6 = 14; write 4 ones and regroup 1 ten.
- Tens: 4 + 3 + 1 = 8.
Answer: 84
Find 65 + 28.
- Ones: 5 + 8 = 13.
- Tens: 6 + 2 + 1 = 9.
Answer: 93
