Expanded form writes a number as the sum of its place values. A three-digit number contains hundreds, tens, and ones. A zero digit means that place contributes zero to the sum.
When a place-value column contains ten or more units, trade ten of them for one unit in the next place. Regrouping changes how the quantity is written, not its value.
If there are not enough ones to subtract, exchange one ten for ten ones. The number stays equal, but its parts are written differently so subtraction is possible in each column.
