Scope: all 21 questions in the 2024 national mathematics item maps for grades 4 and 8. This selected release is not the complete assessment. Results describe individual questions, not all students’ mastery of a topic.
Number sense and arithmetic: what the released NAEP questions show
Explore place value, odd numbers, scientific notation, and multi-step arithmetic. These questions require different combinations of calculation and reasoning.

Where the numbers come from
Percentages and significance labels come from the National Center for Education Statistics’ 2024 NAEP mathematics report. We add explanations of the learning demands and links to our own practice. Those teaching interpretations are separate from NCES findings.
