Number sense and arithmetic: what the released NAEP questions show
Explore place value, odd numbers, scientific notation, and multi-step arithmetic. These questions require different combinations of calculation and reasoning.
What this selection shows
The 6 released questions in this report span 2% to 87% receiving full credit in 2024. The lowest value belongs to “Determine and explain how to find numbers that have specific properties” at grade 4. This ranks only these released items by their full-credit rates; it does not establish the hardest math skill overall.
Compare each item with itself across years. Differences between items can reflect wording, scoring rules, response format, and mathematical demands. We do not average them into a topic proficiency score.

What to notice
Reasoning about numerical properties can demand a complete explanation. A low full-credit percentage does not tell us whether students could identify some valid examples or received partial credit. Practice by checking a proposed example and explaining why every condition holds.
2024 compared with 2022: No statistically significant change reported.
2024 compared with 2019: 1 percentage-point decrease reported.
Multi-step stories require choosing an order of operations before computing. Write one expression for the entire situation and explain what each quantity represents.
2024 compared with 2022: 2 percentage-point increase reported.
2024 compared with 2019: No statistically significant change reported.
The same digit has different values in different positions. Expanded form makes the contribution of each position visible and helps reveal missing zero placeholders.

What to notice
Missing-digit subtraction requires respecting place values and regrouping constraints. Work one column at a time and verify the completed calculation with addition.

What to notice
Compare the powers of ten before the leading coefficients when numbers are in normalized scientific notation. A large coefficient does not outweigh a sufficiently smaller exponent.
2024 compared with 2022: No statistically significant change reported.
2024 compared with 2019: 4 percentage-point decrease reported.

Method and limitations
We transcribed the complete released national item-map dataset from the official 2024 mathematics report: 11 questions at grade 4 and 10 at grade 8. This page filters that set by the official content-area classification. No question was selected because its result looked unusually high or low.
Full credit is not the same as partial credit. NAEP Proficient is also not equivalent to grade-level proficiency. The released questions do not represent every skill taught in either grade, and results cannot diagnose an individual learner.
Official percentage-point changes are based on unrounded estimates, so they can differ from subtracting the displayed percentages. We retain the source’s significance labels and do not infer why a change occurred.
