An inequality defines a set of possible values. Finding the greatest permitted value adds a boundary decision. Practice the difference between “less than” and “less than or equal to” using a number line.

Method and limitations
We transcribed the complete released national item-map dataset from the official 2024 mathematics report: 11 questions at grade 4 and 10 at grade 8. This page filters that set by the official content-area classification. No question was selected because its result looked unusually high or low.
Full credit is not the same as partial credit. NAEP Proficient is also not equivalent to grade-level proficiency. The released questions do not represent every skill taught in either grade, and results cannot diagnose an individual learner.
Official percentage-point changes are based on unrounded estimates, so they can differ from subtracting the displayed percentages. We retain the source’s significance labels and do not infer why a change occurred.
