Read ordered pairs and solve linear equations using signed arithmetic.

Worked example

Adult tickets cost $9; child tickets cost $5. A group buys 5 tickets for $33. How many of each ticket were bought?

1. Let A and C be ticket counts. A + C = 5.
2. 9A + 5C = 33.
3. Substitute C = total − A into the cost equation.

Answer: 2 adult tickets and 3 child tickets
