Adding within twenty by making ten
To add within twenty, you can count on from the larger number or make a group of ten first. Making ten uses a known pair such as 8 and 2, then adds whatever remains.
A method you can use
- Choose the larger addend as your starting point.
- Work out how many more it needs to reach ten.
- Split the other addend into that part and a leftover part; add the leftover to ten.
Worked examples
Find 9 + 7.
- Split 7 into 1 and 6.
- 9 + 1 + 6 = 10 + 6.
Answer: 16
Find 6 + 6.
- Six needs four to make ten; split the other 6 into 4 and 2.
- 6 + 4 + 2 = 10 + 2.
Answer: 12
